Because we’re in for one heck of a long book. The group voted at November’s meeting and even after a recount the vote was close – the top three choices were all one vote apart. However, the winner is….
“1Q84” by Haruki Murakami (woot!). We’re reading a long book because we don’t meet in December, so we have two months to make it through what may possibly be the longest book this humble librarian has ever read. I think the trip will be worth it, though! “1Q84” was a NYT Notable Book of the Year in 2011, translated from Japanese. The Q stands for question mark in this novel paying homage to “1984,” because one of the main characters, Aomame, slips over to a parallel universe that’s full of questions. Meanwhile, another character, Tengo, becomes wrapped up in the chaotic life and work of an author looking for a ghostwriter. Aomame’s and Tengo’s narratives converge over the course of this epic novel full of strange and truly unique characters. Part love story, mystery, fantasy, dystopian science fiction, and journey of self-discovery, Murakami’s work is testament to imagination.
Copies of the book and audiobook are available to pick up at the Reference. Seriously, come pick one up before these teetering piles collapse and seriously injure us. We meet again on Tuesday January 24 at 7:30 in the left-hand-side bar of Napper Tandy’s. Happy Holidays everyone!
