There’s a fly on the wall of Titles on Tap

ms_marvel_coverWe’re meeting at Napper Tandy’s tonight 4/26 at 7:30 pm to discuss Volumes 1 and 2 of the new Ms. Marvel, “No Normal” and Generation Why.” A Pakistani-American Muslim teenage girl in Jersey City as Ms Marvel – does it work? We’d love to hear your thoughts about these graphic novels? Meet us in the left-hand-side bar at Napper Tandy’s in Norwood.

And in May, there will be a fly on the wall of Titles on Tap. We’ll be reading “Jacob’s Folly” by Rebecca Miller, which involves an 18th-century Jewish merchant in Paris named Jacob Cerf. Our Jacob is reincarnated as a fly in the 21st-century Long Island suburbs…yup, a fly, as in buzz buzz. In Miller’s book of historical fiction and magical realism, even a tiny insect can influence people’s lives, and thanks to the new Jacob, the lives of a volunteer fireman and a young Orthodox Jewish woman will never be the same.

Copies are available at Reference, so pick one up and join us Tuesday May 24 at 7:30 pm!TOT_JacobsFolly_SM

A new kind of superhero

ms_marvel_coverHi all! Phew, sorry to go so long between posts, but you honestly won’t need much lead time to catch up on our April book. Well, books. We’re reading Issues 1-10 of the new “Ms. Marvel” graphic novel series. Some of our members picked up hardcover books containing Issues 1-10, and some of us will pick up Volumes 1 and 2 separately, “No Normal” and “Generation Why.” If you pick up the two soft-cover volumes, you’ll actually be getting Issues 1-11, but I don’t think anyone will complain about having a little extra. In fact, one member has already burned through Volumes 1-4 and has no more “Ms. Marvel” left to read, she was that hooked.

These slim volumes turn the Ms. Marvel cannon around – no longer is she a buxom blonde accessory character, but in this new iteration is a Muslim-American teenager living in Jersey City. She rocks the superhero jam in her own unique way. There’s a giant dog, some familiar superheroes, and awesome full-color illustrations.

Copies of Volumes 1 and 2 are available to pick up at the Reference Desk, and you can very likely pick these up the day before we meet and still be plenty prepared. More power to you if you read Volumes 3 and 4! Join us Tuesday 4/26 at 7:30 pm at Napper Tandy’s left-hand-side bar 😀
