And the winner is…

signatureofallthings“The Signature of All Things” by Elizabeth Gilbert. The vote between this and “Will Starling” by Ian Weir was close, but the scale was tipped by the fact that, being a few years older, Gilbert’s book has been released in multiple formats. “Will Starling” seems to be too new to have an audiobook, and some of our members love them some audiobooks.

Weighing in at 499 pages, “The Signature of All Things” is the longest book we’ve read so far – but don’t panic, we have 2 months to read this one, and we figured this would be a nice book to cozy up with over the holidays. This historical fiction spans much of the 18th and 19th centuries and several continents, following a family of pioneering botanists. The brilliant Alma, following in her scientific father’s footsteps, is a tenacious bulldog when it comes to seeking scientific truths. Enter the romantic conflict of falling in love with a spiritualist (read charlatan?), plus the drama of shady explorers and quickly changing societies, and we have our novel. Titles on Tappers will appreciate this novel’s lyrical prose and exotic locales  :-p

Oh, and if you’re looking sideways at the screen wondering if this is the same Elizabeth Gilbert who wrote “Eat, Pray, Love,” yes it is. But wait, don’t hang up! If “Eat, Pray, Love” wasn’t your cup of tea, you should still give this book a chance. It’s a novel, not a memoir, and according to book reviewers, is written very differently. In fact, a number of reviewers who detested “Eat, Pray, Love” were expecting to dislike this book just as much, but were pleasantly surprised when they really enjoyed it. So please, give it a chance, and hey if you hate it, we’ll have more to talk about in January!

We have copies of both the print and CD versions, plus don’t forget to check Overdrive for the ebook and e-audiobook copies. We meet again at Napper Tandy’s on Tuesday January 26th @ 7:30 pm. Happy holidays folks!
